Monday Box Office Breakdown (X-MEN: APOCALYPSE Takes the Member Gold)

As the long weekend approached, moviegoers seemed anxious to watch X-Men: Apocalypse and Alice Through the Looking Glass battle for box office gold. With sequel pitted against sequel, each with an overwhelming amount of star power, both films seemed to be promising choices. Yet, faithful to the immense popularity of superhero films, X-Men: Apocalypse took the number one spot amongst MoviePass members, accounting for 33.75% of member check-ins.

Despite less than stellar reviews, the film dominated the US box office, with a projected total of $80 million for the Memorial Day weekend. Apparently, MoviePass members were not the only cinephiles excited to see their beloved X-Men return to the big screen!

Second place amongst members was “Alice Through the Looking Glass,” accounting for 12.43% of this weekend’s check-ins. Unfortunately, the sequel to 2010’s box office success, Alice in Wonderland, had a weak performance at the domestic box office, with an estimated box office total of $34.2 million for the long weekend.

It seems as though the film’s mostly negative reviews impacted its box office performance.

After the excitement of an action-packed comic book film and the splendor of a visually-stunning fantasy, members opted for a good laugh. In third, fourth, and fifth place, respectively, were The Nice Guys, Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising, and Love & Friendship. The Crowe and Gosling period piece accounted for 11.05% of this weekend’s check-ins, while Neighbors 2 accounted for 7.62%, and the Jane Austen period piece, accounted for 5.16% of all member check-ins.

What are we watching this week? Luckily, there is something for everyone. If dramatic film adaptations pique your interest, then Me Before You, starring Game of Thrones’s Emilia Clarke, seems like the perfect choice! If you prefer to continue your superhero movie marathon, then Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, has your name written all over it! On the other hand, if you enjoy a good comedy, check out Andy Samberg’s Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping.
