When Now You See Me made its 2013 theatrical debut, it was met with polarizing critical reviews. Yet, the film’s onscreen magic conjured up box office gold, grossing a total of $117.7 million domestically and $351.7 million worldwide. So, it’s no surprise that the film’s highly anticipated sequel claimed this weekend’s top spot amongst MoviePass members. Filled with magic, Morgan (Freeman), and Michael (Caine),Now You See Me: The Second Act, accounted for 22.94% of all member check-ins.

Despite largely negative critical reviews, the follow-up to the 2013 box office smash debuted at #2 domestically, making a solid $23.03 million, compared to the $29.35 million opening weekend of its predecessor. Now You See Me: The Second Act, reunites much of its original cast, while bringing a few new faces—Daniel Radcliffe, Lizzy Caplan, and Jay Chou—into the fold. Popular amongst members, Now You See Me: The Second Act, proves that you can never be too old for magic.

This weekend, another sequel claimed second place in the MoviePass Member Top 5. With a weekend domestic gross of $40.35 million, The Conjuring 2 performed almost as well as its predecessor, taking first place at the domestic box office.  Amongst MoviePass members, it accounted for 18.77% of check-ins. Wow! Despite less critical acclaim than the first installment, The Conjuring 2 still delivered enough frights to make moviegoers clutch their chests and scream at the top of their lungs. After being dazzled and frightened, members chose to be transported to a fantasy realm. In third place, this weekend, was Warcraft, the highly-anticipated, live action adaptation of the beloved video game. Accounting for 12.69% of member check-ins, the film faired well amongst MoviePass members, who showed no regard for the overwhelmingly negative reviews. Perhaps, it was the film’s strong performance in China that peaked member curiosity. Debuting at number two at the domestic box office, the fantasy film grossed $24.36 million in the US, approximately 41.8% less than The Conjuring 2, which took the top spot.

Claiming fourth and fifth place, respectively, are Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping and Me Before You–both of which made last week’s Monday Box Office Breakdown. Accounting for a total of 5.41% of member check-ins, Popstar experienced a 73.7% decline in reservations. Despite positive reviews, the film has only grossed $8.31 million domestically. In fact, the decline in popularity amongst MoviePass members, is significantly higher than the 64.3% difference between the film’s opening and second weekend grosses. This discrepancy can be attributed to the film’s surprising popularity amongst MoviePass members, during opening weekend, despite its weak box office performance.

On the other hand, Me Before You accounted for 5.15% of this weekend’s member check-ins, experiencing a 68% decline compared to last weekend’s reservations. In all fairness, it’s pretty difficult to compete against two highly anticipated sequels and a video game adaptation.
