With Oscar weekend occupying most cinephiles’ attentions, we saw a relatively quiet weekend both for MoviePass members and at the box office.

I was way off on my prediction last week: members went for the more positively reviewed fare, with 17% of check-ins going to Eddie the Eagle. It had a 73% on Rotten Tomatoes and took a modest $6.3M at the box office.

Close behind it was Triple 9, which I thought would take #1, getting 15% of check-ins. It did close numbers at the box office as well, taking $6.1M, and its Tomatometer rating was also a good 20% lower at 55%.

We may as well lump Gods of Egypt into the top 3 as well, since it was also a new release. The worst Tomatometer rating of the weekend (12%) ended up getting it the biggest box office haul of the weekend out of new releases, coming in second with an estimated $14M. With the MoviePass crowd, it came in third with 11%.

Bringing up the rear of the top 5 were two holdovers from previous weeks. The Witch nabbed 8.3%, down 62% from last weekend, and the Merc with the Mouth is still hanging out in the top 5: Deadpool took 7.6%, down 43% from last week. We’ll probably be seeing it get bumped out of the top 5 this coming weekend. Speaking of…

What’s next week? It should be quite an interesting battle between Gerard Butler and Morgan Freeman in London Has Fallen, Tina Fey in Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, and a host of big voices in Zootopia. The box office will be a clearcut, no-brainer win for Zootopia, but with the MoviePass crowd, it may not be so certain. Members tend not to gravitate as heavily towards the animated kids fare. Despite this, with Zootopia’s perfect Tomatometer rating of 100%, I think it will end up winning the weekend, with London Has Fallen coming in behind it.

In limited release, we’ve also got Terrence Malick’s Knight of Cups and horror movie the Other Side of the Door.

What did you catch this weekend? Are you surprised by the results? What are you seeing next  weekend?? Sound off in the comments below.
