It was slightly slower than last week’s 3-day President’s Day weekend, but members still came out in force to catch new horror movie the Witch.
Coming in first place with 21.4%, the indie horror also picked up a fairly impressive number at the box office given it’s budget; it had an estimated $8.6M for the weekend. It’s got a strong rating on Rotten Tomatoes at 88%, which likely pushed the MoviePass numbers and the box office receipts up.
Holding strong was the movie of the year (so far) Deadpool, down 64% from last weekend’s huge first place to 13.4%. At the box office, at an estimated domestic gross of $235M, Deadpool has now grossed more than any of the previous X-men movies. Suck on that, Wolverine. 😉
In the third place position, we had Race, the Jesse Owens biopic starring Stephan James and Jason Sudeikis. It took 10.2%, just beating faith-based movie Risen, which took 8.1%. Holding strongly in fifth was How to Be Single, only dropping 42% from its premiere last weekend to arrive at 7.9%.
What’s next week? Three wide releases coming into theaters next weekend, all very different genres. There’s Gods of Egypt, a fantasy action movie that looks like a biblical epic mixed with Transformers. Then there’s Triple 9, a fast-paced, R-rated heist thriller centered around police corruption. Finally, Eddie the Eagle follows the story of Eddie Edwards, the notoriously tenacious British underdog ski jumper who charmed the world at the 1988 Winter Olympics.
It’s a tough call, but I think I’m calling this one for Triple 9. Behind it will be Gods of Egypt, followed by Eddie the Eagle. We’ll see what happens.
