Our numbers showed a clear winner this weekend: the new Coen Brothers comedy Hail, Caesar! sat at the top of the check-in charts, taking 26.4% of all movies seen this weekend by MoviePass members.
With a 79% on Rotten Tomatoes and taking second place at the box office nationwide with $11.4M (making it the top-performing newcomer as well), this should be seen as a relatively successful result for an off-beat comedy debuting on Super Bowl weekend.
Meanwhile, farther down the charts, we find Pride and Prejudice and Zombies at #2, with less than half the check-ins at 10.1%. It flopped at the box office, taking an estimated $5.2M and losing to the Nicholas Sparks adaptation the Choice, which took $6.1M. For MoviePass members, the Choice ended up performing much worse, taking a low third place with 5.4%.
Bringing up the rear in fourth and fifth place for members were Kung Fu Panda 3, dropping 70% from last week to arrive at 3.8% of movies seen. The animated sequel ended up winning the box office weekend with $21M. After that was the Revenant, which is holding very well, likely given the new Oscar nomination buzz. It ended up back in the top 5 with 2.6%, as newer holdovers like the Finest Hours, Dirty Grandpa, and Fifty Shades of Black dropped out.
What’s next week? It’s a crowded weekend for comedies. We’ve got Marvel’s R-rated Deadpool, which I’m predicting will have a very strong win with members this weekend. Zoolander 2 may be very, very close behind and may even take a bigger share. It’s going to be a tight race between those two.
Rebel Wilson-starring comedy How to Be Single is also coming out, although with a weekend like this, I can’t see it getting a lot of traction. In limited release is also Michael Moore’s Where to Invade Next.
