Monday Box Office Breakdown (KUNG FU PANDA Leads in a Balanced Weekend)

A surprise win for an animated family movie amongst the MoviePass audience, Kung Fu Panda 3 was champion of the weekend with 12.8% of check-ins this past weekend.

It was a shock to me to see that the animated sequel was at the top of the member charts this weekend, as these types of movies tend to play fairly low with members. The mostly positive reviews (79% on Rotten Tomatoes) may have contributed to its increased share; it ended up being the highest rated release of the weekend and took first place at the box office overall with $41M.

The remainder of the top 5 for members were evenly spaced, all within 3% of each other. In second was Chris Pine, Casey Affleck starrer from Disney the Finest Hours, which took 9.1%. In an impressive third place, given that it was only released in 1,210 theaters, was Jane Got a Gun, grabbing 8.8%. The fourth and fifth spots were split between a first place holdover from the previous weekend and a newcomer: Dirty Grandpa at 6.2% (a 56% drop from last week), and Fifty Shades of Black at 6%.

What’s next week? The first of what should be at least a couple good weekends for moviegoers in February, we’ll see the Coen Brothers’ new movie Hail, Caesar! premiere alongside Pride & Prejudice & Zombies, Nicholas Sparks adaptation the Choice, and a limited release of the supernatural thriller Regression starring Ethan Hawke and Emma Watson. I think it’ll be a big weekend for the Coen Brothers with members, and Hail, Caesar! is likely to reign supreme. Let’s call it close between that and Pride & Prejudice & Zombies, but I think the Choice will end up lagging behind.

What’d you see this past week? What will you see next week? Give us the lowdown in the comments below.
