Welp, my prediction was way off from last week.

Expecting Star Wars to continue its success with our member base, I had thought they would retain their top spot. Apparently, I underestimated Jennifer Lawrence and David O’Russell.

Joy came out as the top performing movie amongst members this weekend, nabbing 17% of check-ins this holiday weekend. Pretty impressive, and its performance at the box office was equally impressive: even with the crowded weekend, the movie took in an estimated $17.5M. Not too shabby for an indie awards-contender.

The rest of the top 5 for members were holding in the competitive low tens: Daddy’s Home came in a surprising second with 12.8%, matching its success at the box office (second place with $38.8M). Both true story, awards movies Concussion and the Big Short tied at 11.2%, then finally Star Wars: The Force Awakens arrived at fifth with a strong 10.1% after dropping 62% from last week.

I was surprised to see Point Break nowhere in the top 5, although with the Rotten Tomatoes score of 4%, the quality likely doomed it for members and at the box office. It took seventh place with members at 6.7% and made $10.2M.

Some other noteworthy news from the box office: Star Wars has grossed over $1 BILLION in its opening 12 days! A huge feat for the franchise and all the filmmakers involved. Congrats to them.

What’s next week? Nothing. That’s right, we can’t find any movies that are releasing wide next week. If you’re in NY or LA, you could catch Anomalisa by Charlie Kaufman. But everywhere else? Maybe you’ll just need to check out a movie you didn’t get a chance to see yet.

Enjoy your New Years!
