Good to be back after the Star Wars: The Force Awakens monster weekend.
The big news is the record breaking weekend for the movie, blasting straight through Jurassic World’s record with an estimated $238M for the weekend.
On the MoviePass side, it was a more muted weekend, likely due to the pre-sales occupying most of the theater seats. With 26.8%, Star Wars took the top slot for the weekend, but the number certainly didn’t tell the whole story about the movie’s success. I’m betting there will be high numbers next week as the pre-bought ticket fever calms down.
On its heels in second was Tina Fey and Amy Poehler‘s Sisters with 22.2%. This was predictably the plan-B for members, as the only other release, Alvin and the Chipmunks: Road Chip, was doomed for failure, and indeed, it ended up in third with 7.6%. Historically, animated family fare has not done too strongly with MoviePass-ers.
Despite the poor showing of the Chipmunks amongst members, it ended up beating Sisters for second place in the box office charts with $14.4M over the Sisters‘ $13.4M.
What’s next week? Christmas weekend is upon us, and I’m betting Star Wars will retain its top place with members and at the box office. We’ll see some potential awards contenders release, with Will Smith in Concussion and Jennifer Lawrence in Joy, but I don’t think they’ll make a dent in the Star Wars lead. We’ve also got comedy Daddy’s Home, starring Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg, and the Point Break remake/reboot. My hopes are not high for those last two, but we’ll see!
