It’s been a while since the hip-hop community has anticipated a film as much as Straight Outta Compton. With F. Gary Gray’s N.W.A. biopic slated to bring the ruckus to theaters nationwide tomorrow, STASHED had the chance to catch up with the actors who played the pioneering rap group’s most prominent members and discuss their roles, the film’s historical context, and more.
One task required of actors Corey Hawkins (Dr. Dre), Jason Mitchell (Eazy-E), and O’Shea Jackson Jr. (Ice Cube) was having to master the live stage show aspect of their roles. “I didn’t care about the cameras, it’s all about the crowd,” explains O’Shea, who had a natural advantage over the rest of his castmates as the son of the real-life N.W.A. emcee he portrayed in the film, Ice Cube.
During their sit-down with STASHED and MoviePass, the trio also discuss the challenges they faced while playing Dre, Eazy, and Cube, three figures whose rage against the machine was fueled by the kind of social injustices that are once again dominating the headlines 20 years later. The cast also details that they had to tackle balancing the mythos of these iconic figures versus the real trials that the rap group had to endure.
While all part of the same group, certain members of N.W.A. required a special type of discipline to portray on the big screen. In the case of Corey Hawkins, for example, that meant actually learning how to produce a record in order to accurately portray the legendary producer Dr. Dre.
Also a topic of discussion during the interview was music, specifically the one album everyone is currently talking about, Dr. Dre’s new – and supposedly final – album, Compton: A Soundtrack By Dr. Dre. The cast remembers witnessing Dr. Dre suddenly flip the switch and go into album mode after being inspired by what he saw on the SOC set, and shares their initial impressions upon hearing the album in the studio with Dre.
