The Despicable Me spinoff Minions is the new champion this summer in animated movie category, easily beating Pixar’s opening weekend for Inside Out at $115.2M (the Pixar movie grossed $90.4M on its first weekend) and pushing it farther down the weekend charts to #3).
With that total, Minions is the second biggest animated opening in history, passing Shrek 2 and Toy Story 3, settling just under Shrek the Third, which is still at the top with $121.6M. Distributor Universal Studios can’t be too upset by that, especially coming off the heels of the biggest opening of all-time with Jurassic World.
Meanwhile, while Ryan Reynolds is in the spotlight for Deadpool at this year’s Comic-Con in San Diego, his current presence in the theater is lacking. Self/Less performed under expectations, nearly hitting $5.4M. Doing slightly better at $10M was found-footage horror movie The Gallows, which barely pushed Magic Mike XXL out of the top 5 by about $600k.
On to the MoviePass stats! As you might imagine, Minions was easily at the top, grabbing almost 25% of check ins this weekend. The other new releases were flipped for #2 and #3, with Self/Less grabbing 15% and the Gallows only getting 8%. Terminator: Genisys still held in the top 5 at #4 with 7%, followed closely by documentary Amy about the late Amy Winehouse at 6.9%, which saw an expansion this week to 335 theaters.
