Box office for the weekend told a different story from the MoviePass member charts: the Huntsman: Winter’s War fell flat across the nation, pulling in a weak $20M weekend and losing out to the Jungle Book in its second week, but it came back with a vengeance in the member charts, taking first place with a 21.4% weekend take.

The prequel to Snow White and the Huntsman did far worse than its predecessor. Seems the Snow White name is worth an extra $36M at the opening weekend, which netted the first Disney spinoff $56M on its release. Quality-wise, both movies did not fare well, but Winter’s War was far more rotten, only managing 17% positive reviews vs the previous movie’s 48%.

The next three in the member top five were all holdovers from the previous week.

In second place was Jon Favreau‘s the Jungle Book, which dropped 53% to arrive at 12.4% of the weekend. It held on impressively at the box office for a lower drop of 41%, taking in a solid $60M weekend.

Kevin Costner in Criminal took third place with 5.9% after a 52% drop, followed by Barbershop: the Next Cut, which dropped 44% to take 5.6%.

A big win for Tom Hanks in his indie movie a Hologram for the King! Opening in only 401 theaters across the country, it was able to break into our top five with an impressive 5.3% take. A modest 63% on Rotten Tomatoes leads me to believe that it was Tom Hanks’ name alone that really brought people out to this one. Will be curious to see what members took away from this one.

What’s next week? Three wide releases are debuting next weekend, and I have a feeling Key and Peele’s comedy Keanu will lead the way. We also have holiday-directed, star-filled Mother’s Day, which will probably be more “mom appropriate” for those looking to celebrate with a movie this Sunday. We’ll also see a video game adaptation release for Ratchet and Clank. There’s been a lot of love for this game, although I don’t know how well a crossover movie will do. It may beat Mother’s Day amongst members this weekend, but we’ll see what happens!

What are you excited to see next week? Do you/did you play Ratchet & Clank and are you excited for the movie? Will Key and Peele be able to translate their humor to the big screen? Share the post and add your comments below.
