This weekend, Disney is releasing yet another adaptation of one of their classic animated movies; audiences are being introduced to a live-action Beauty and the Beast starring the beloved actress, Emma Watson, and Dan Stevens. We have received some fantastic live-action adaptations from Disney so far such as Cinderella, Alice In Wonderland, and my personal favorite: The Jungle Book. Fortunately for us, the company has many more of these adaptations in the works. Let’s take a look at the overwhelming and exciting amount of upcoming live-action Disney remakes.

MULAN
Release Date: November 2, 2018
Director: Niki Caro
Cast: TBA

Arriving in late 2018, Mulan will recapture the magic of the original animated film. Many fans of the feature were worried that the movie would be whitewashed, but fortunately, Disney has confirmed that the film will definitely feature an Asian cast, including Mulan. The prestigious Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver will be penning the script. The public has only received this information thus far, but I have faith that Disney will be able to successfully portray the complex issues that this animated film has to offer.

THE LION KING
Release Date: TBA
Director: Jon Favreau
Cast: James Earl Jones, Donald Glover

Even though The Lion King is easily one of the most praised Disney films of all time, not many people could possibly imagine it as a live action film. However, this was quickly changed after the world was introduced to The Jungle Book; after its success, Disney snagged Jon Favreau again for a Lion King live-action adaptation. The iconic James Earl Jones is returning to voice Mufasa while Disney newcomer Donald Glover will be the voice of Simba. Between these three talents at the helm, I’m extremely excited for this movie.

THE JUNGLE BOOK 2
Director: Jon Favreau
Release Date: TBD
Cast: Neel Sethi (most likely)

As we have previously discussed, The Jungle Book was an extremely successful film – it made a billion dollars at the box office! Given that, it’s not surprising that Disney is making a sequel with Jon Favreau returning as director. We will most likely see the majority of the cast return, but the one concern many seem to have is the direction of the story. Favreau has said that they are confident and have a clear vision of how the narrative will continue, but personally, I will be happy as long as the film does not follow the plot of the animated sequel.

ALADDIN
Release Date: TBA
Director: Guy Ritchie
Cast: TBA

Disney is clearly adapting the golden age of their oeuvre first (the 1990s) and how could they do that without an Aladdin movie? At first, it appeared as though Disney was working on a spin off film for Genie, but they quickly realized that Robin Williams is the one and only wish master. It will be interesting to see who they decide to cast as Genie in the upcoming Aladdin live-action film. The only real information that we currently have about the feature is that Guy Ritchie will be in the director’s chair. Besides the absence of Robin Williams, I am highly confident that this movie will be amazing!

DUMBO
Release Date: TBA
Director: Tim Burton
Cast: Eva Green, Danny DeVito

In my opinion, Dumbo is not necessarily the film that best fits a live-action adaptation, but we have seen Disney do some pretty magical things year after year. Tim Burton is the perfect director for this feature, as he can truly put his own mark on the story. He is amazing at portraying the freaks of nature (sorry Dumbo, you, me, and the entire cast of your original film know your ears are a little big). The movie is said to expand on the original story and focus heavily on the circus while adding a human family into the mix. Eva Green and Danny DeVito are teaming up with Burton once again. Overall, this film is looking pretty fabulous, besides the fact that the guy who wrote the last three Transformers movies is writing the script (but we’re giving him a chance!).

CHRISTOPHER ROBBIN
Release Date: TBA
Director: Marc Forster
Cast: TBA

Disney has clearly realized that Winnie the Pooh has practically fallen off the radar and therefore, a live action remake wouldn’t cut it. That’s when they came up with the idea for a film that revolves around an adult Christopher Robin. At this point in his life, he has grown out of the joyful imagination he had as a young boy. He is then surprised when Winnie the Pooh arrives on his doorstep looking for help (think Hook and Alvin and the Chipmunks). Hopefully, this movie can recapture the magic of Winnie the Pooh, Tigger, and the rest of his gang in a fresh and unique way.

THE LITTLE MERMAID
Release Date: TBA
Director: Rebecca Thomas
Cast: TBA

This film was announced almost a year ago, yet we haven’t had much of an update on development since. Originally, Sofia Coppola and Joe Wright were set to direct the live-action Disney adaptation, but then, they quickly and surprisingly dropped out. So, Rebecca Thomas is stepping in. On top of this, the film lost its lead actress, Chloe Grace-Moretz, after she announced her hiatus from acting. Will the movie still be made? Probably and eagerly await more details.

CRUELLA
Release Date: TBA
Director: TBA
Cast: Emma Stone

Even though Magnificent was not the most beloved film among moviegoers, Disney is ready to give a villain another shot with Cruella, which will focus on the 101 Dalmatians’ anatgonist in more depth. Academy Award winner Emma Stone is attached to the film. It has gone through several rewrites, but is still in active development. Hopefully, we’ll get more developments soon.

PETER PAN
Release Date: TBA
Director: David Lowery
Cast: TBA

Hook did not grab the general audience as much as Disney anticipated and now Pete’s Dragon director, David Lowery, will helm the new Peter Pan live-action adaptation. This film will have a new take on the Peter Pan story, but will stay more in line with the original plot.  Lowery is currently working on the script and more information is anticipated to come out in the coming months.

TINK
Release Date: TBA
Director: TBA
Cast: Reese Witherspoon

Tinker Bell is one of Disney’s most beloved and iconic characters and they’ve finally begun production on a film all about her; granting Tink a movie that is not a straight-to-DVD release. Tinker Bell will have her own live-action adaptation with Reese Witherspoon who will bring the fairy to life. Victoria Strouse, who wrote Finding Dory, is currently revising the script. Hopefully, Tink has enough pixie dust to fly out of the pre-production stage.

THE SWORD IN THE STONE
Release Date: TBA
Director: TBA
Cast: TBA

The fantasy genre will definitely be rediscovered in this film and what better way to do it than with Game of Thrones writer Bryan Cogman taking on the script? GoT owns fantasy on television, but can Cogman bring the same magic to this classic tale? Obviously, there will be much less violence, gore, and sex, but it still has a lot of potential to be great!

PINOCCHIO
Release Date: TBA
Director: TBA
Cast: TBA

A live-action adaptation of Pinocchio has been in the works for years over at Disney, but we can only hope that a director finally picks up the film. Guillermo Del Toro is currently working on the script and hopefully, that means Disney could be putting a dark twist on the tale where a puppet becomes a real boy.

SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARFS
Release Date: TBA
Director: TBA
Cast: TBA

Considered to be one of the most successful animated features of all time, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs will also have its turn at a live-action remake. With screenwriter Erin Cressida Wilson (The Girl on the Train) in negotiations to write the script, the film will also feature new music from the Academy Award winning duo of La La Land, Benj Pasek and Justin Paul. If you’re like me and think City of Stars is catchy, then you definitely won’t be able to resist the reimagining of this classic.

Make yourself heard!
