Hollywood is filled to the brim with an insurmountable number of talented actors and actresses. It seems like there will never be a time where a big-name studio will not be able to find an actor to fill a specific role as there are thousands upon thousands of actors that will do anything to star in big-budget movies. Nevertheless, Hollywood still has its ‘A-list’ actors that are recycled over and over again, but have you ever wondered which actor or actress has starred in the most amount of movies?

Many actors in Hollywood will star in one or two big blockbusters a year and also work on a bunch of smaller films. Given that, it would be almost impossible to find out the actor who has starred in the most amount of movies in general. However, we can narrow down our search to exclusively “blockbuster films” that meet certain requirements such as grossing $125 million at the domestic box office (because at that point the movie is pretty successful) and that were screened at thousands of theaters nationwide. Also, the actor/actress has to have had a leading or major supporting role in the film in order for it to count. Let’s get started!

10. Robert Downey Jr. (8)

Robert Downey Jr. is Iron Man and for the rest of his career, Tony Stark will be his most iconic role. Downey Jr. has played the character since 2008 in Iron Man, along with its two sequels. On top of that, Robert Downey Jr. has starred in both Avengers movies and the recent Captain America: Civil War. However, Iron Man isn’t Robert Downey’s only role, as he played the titular Sherlock Holmes in two movies in 2009 and 2011. In total, Robert Downey Jr. has starred in a staggering 8 blockbuster films.

RDJ’s future is bright as he has many Marvel movies coming up the road such as Spider-Man Homecoming this July, Avengers: Infinity War next May, and the untitled Avengers 4 movie. Those three movies are guaranteed to make $125 million at the domestic box office alone – but his time at Marvel may be coming to an end after Phase 3 (at least in a leading role). Therefore, Robert Downey Jr. has already been expanding his options. He recently signed on to be the star of the Dr. Dolittle reboot and due to how big of a star RDJ has become, there is a good chance the movie passes the $125 million mark if it gets positive reviews.

It is also noteworthy to state that Scarlett Johansson is tied with her co-star Robert Downey Jr. with 8 blockbusters on her resume. RDJ gets the spot on this list because he has a higher lifetime gross total, but if Ghost and the Shell fares well at the domestic box office, Scarlett Johansson may be able to make her way into the Top 10 until Spider-Man: Homecoming in July where Downey Jr. will come back.

9. Orlando Bloom (9)

Orlando Bloom isn’t necessarily the biggest actor around, especially recently, as he has been starring in very small films. Bloom makes this list purely because he was a main character in two extremely successful franchises. Orlando is most known for his role as the iconic archer, Legolas, in The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit movies. On top of that role, he played Will Turner in three of the four Pirates of the Caribbean movies, but the only non-franchise blockbuster Bloom starred in was Troy, bringing his blockbuster hit total to a solid 9.

This May, Bloom will most likely be adding a tenth film to the list with Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man Tell No Tales, which will be a huge hit at the box office. Besides the Pirates franchise and with The Lord of the Rings/Hobbit world being left alone, we will have to wait and see if Bloom will inhabit a bigger presence in Hollywood.

Personally, I hope the talented actor signs onto some more original blockbusters and at the same time joins another popular franchise.

8. Ben Stiller (9)

Ben Stiller has definitely made us laugh with an array of comedic films that have certainly performed well at the box office. Stiller voiced the main character, Alex the Lion, in the Madagascar Dreamworks animated trilogy. On the live-action spectrum, he played Larry Daley in the Night at the Museum trilogy as well. These weren’t his only three trilogies as he starred in Meet the Parents in 2000, which spun off two sequels titled Meet the Fockers and Little Fockers.

In total, Ben Stiller was in three blockbuster trilogies, bringing his total number of blockbuster hits to 9. However, Stiller may be slowing down, as he has not planned to star in any upcoming films.

7. Emma Watson (9)

While Scarlett Johansson didn’t make the list, Emma Watson is carrying the torch for female leads. She played Hermione Granger in all eight Harry Potter movies from The Sorcerer’s Stone to The Deathly Hallows Part II. The movie that put her on top of her other Potter co-stars is the very recent Beauty and the Beast – which is making a killing at the box office right now!

In total, Watson has had 9 blockbuster hits in her career – so far. While next month’s The Circle is Emma’s next upcoming film, which is a smaller movie and almost definitely won’t hit the $125 million mark, she has proven to the public that she is one of the most charming, elegant, and talented actresses Hollywood has to offer.

6. Harrison Ford (11)

If I raised the bar for entry from $125 to $150 million, Harrison Ford would be much higher on this list, but alas, he has been tumbled over from the number one spot in recent years. Anyways, Harrison Ford has obviously starred as Han Solo in the Star Wars original trilogy – A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi – along with 2015’s The Force Awakens. Also, Ford starred as Indiana Jones in all four Indiana Jones movies. Besides these two extremely iconic roles, Harrison starred as the lead in The Fugitive, Air Force One, and What Lies Beneath (and to answer your question, I did not forget Blade Runner, it flopped at the box office when it was first released).

In total, Ford has had a total of 11 blockbuster hits in his career – but it is far from over for this old-timer. Even though Harrison Ford’s Star Wars career is clearly over, he will continue to lead in his other famous franchise, Indiana Jones, in 2019 with a fifth installment. He is also starring in Blade Runner 2049 in October, which will definitely do better at the box office than the original movie.

5. Will Smith (12)

The next four actors have all had 12 blockbusters in total and were ranked by their lifetime film grosses. Up next is Will Smith, who has absolutely paved a fantastic career for himself. First of all, he starred in the iconic science fiction trilogy Men in Black alongside Tommy Lee Jones. Besides that, Will Smith has starred in mostly original movies.

Following the success of Independence Day in 1996, Smith would continue to star in multiple in-a-row blockbuster hits with Shark Tale, Hitch, I, Robot, Bad Boys II, The Pursuit of Happyness, I Am Legend, and Hancock. Will Smith’s future is still bright (literally) with this year’s science fiction-fantasy film, Bright, which will be a reunion with Suicide Squad director David Ayer helming the film. Also, between a possible fourth Bad Boys movie and a Deadshot solo-movie, Will Smith will continue to have a strong presence in Hollywood

4. Ian McKellen (12)

Like Harrison Ford, if I raised the bar for entry from $125 to $150 million, Ian McKellen would move up to the number 1 spot, which was one of the main reasons I lowered the limit. Ian McKellen has had a strong presence in Hollywood, but he is always in a supporting role. Whether McKellen is playing the villainous Magneto in the X-Men movies or the heroic Gandalf in the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit movies, he has done a magnificent job on-screen. The only two non-franchise movies McKellen has starred in was The DaVinci Code and the new Beauty and the Beast live-action adaptation. Unfortunately, McKellen has no projects scheduled for the future, but we should definitely keep our eyes open.

3. Tom Cruise (12)

Tom Cruise is the definitive action star of the 21st century. Though the Mission Impossible franchise released five movies starring Cruise, he has headlined so many other great films. From classic ’80s flicks like Top Gun and Rain Man to his biggest film to date, War of the Worlds, Cruise is definitely a film icon.

In the 1990’s, Tom steered away from the action flicks and starred in the comedy-drama Jerry Maguire along with the thriller/drama The Firm. A Few Good Men and Minority Report also squeezed their way onto this list, bringing Cruise’s total to a whopping 12 blockbuster hits. In a few months, we will see Tom Cruise expand the monster-verse with The Mummy, followed by Mission Impossible 6, which is in production as of now and will be released in a few years.

2. Samuel L. Jackson (12)

Coming in at a tight second is none other than the most profitable actor of all time: Samuel L. Jackson. He has starred in an insurmountable number of blockbuster hits over his long career. He’s played Nick Fury in multiple Marvel movies. While we only got glimpses of him in Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, and Captain America: The First Avenger, Samuel L. Jackson finally got more than a few minutes of screen time in Iron Man 2 and his biggest film of all-time, The Avengers, along with Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Samuel L. Jackson also starred as Jedi master, Mace Windu, in the prequel trilogy, although his performance in The Phantom Menace was too small to count as a leading or large supporting role. Next, Jackson starred in an array of original blockbusters such as Jurassic Park, Django Unchained, Kingsman: The Secret Service, The Legend of Tarzan, and the recent Kong: Skull Island. Last, but not least, Jackson voiced the superhero Frozone in Pixar’s The Incredibles. Looking towards the future, he is providing his voice for Blazing Samurai along with the action-comedy The Hitman’s Bodyguard in 2018.

1. Tom Hanks (13)

The actor who has starred in the most amount of blockbuster hits is none other than Tom Hanks, who truly deserves the number one spot because he has been the lead in most of his movies and for the most part, he tries to diversify what projects he signs up for. The only blockbuster franchise he has been a part of is Toy Story, but the other 10 movies were successful original movies that people stormed to the theaters to see.

Hanks has starred in Catch Me If You Can, Apollo 13, Sleepless in Seattle, The Polar Express, Saving Private Ryan, Angels & Demons, The Da Vinci Code, Sully, Cast Away, and Forrest Gump. Next month, you can see Hanks star in The Circle alongside Emma Watson and John Boyega. Until then, we will have to wait until Toy Story 4 in 2019.

Make yourself heard!
